The light novel series The Detective Is Already Dead is officially nearing its conclusion. Author Nigozyu announced in the afterword of Volume 14, released on October 23, 2026, that the story is planned to end with Volume 15.
This news comes during a busy period for the franchise, as the second season of the anime adaptation is currently airing in the Fall 2026 season. Since its debut in 2019, the series has become a staple of the MF Bunko J imprint, having won the 15th MF Bunko J Newcomer Award.
What We Know
The series is written by Nigozyu and features illustrations by Umibouzu. Media Factory publishes the original Japanese version under its MF Bunko J label.
For English-speaking readers, Yen Press handles the localization of the light novels. The publisher released the English version of Volume 12 on August 11, 2026. While the Japanese release of Volume 14 occurred on October 23, a specific release date for the final Volume 15 has not yet been confirmed by the Japanese publisher or Yen Press.
Why It Matters
The conclusion of the light novels marks the end of a major property for the MF Bunko J imprint. The series follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man who once served as the assistant to the legendary detective Siesta. A year after her death, Kimizuka continues to navigate a world of mystery and supernatural threats. The final volume will determine the ultimate resolution of Kimizuka's journey and the lingering mysteries Siesta left behind.
Where to Watch
The anime adaptation is produced by studio ENGI, with Manabu Kurihara directing both the first and second seasons. Deko Akao handles series composition, and Yosuke Ito provides character designs. Season 2 premiered on October 7, 2026, and is currently streaming on Crunchyroll in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS. An English dub for the second season began airing on the platform on October 21, 2026.
What Happens Next
Season 2 of the anime is currently airing and is planned for a 13-episode run, based on the three-volume Blu-ray and DVD release schedule. The current season features new cast members Akari Komiyama as Mia Whitlock and Nobuhiko Okamoto as Scarlet, with music by 40mP and Yuyu. While the light novels are ending, no official release date for Volume 15 has been announced.
